What is the ABC Model?

The ABC Model is a core framework in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) used to understand and change behavior. It helps identify what triggers a behavior, the behavior itself, and the outcome that reinforces it.

Antecedent

  • The trigger or cue that initiates the behavior.
  • Can be environmental, social, or internal.

Examples:

  • A teacher asking a child to clean up.
  • Seeing a favorite toy.
  • Feeling frustrated or anxious.

Behavior

  • The action or response the person demonstrates.
  • Should be described objectively and specifically.

Examples:

  • Yelling, crying, or hitting.
  • Following instructions.
  • Picking up toys independently.

Consequence

  • The result or outcome that affects whether the behavior will occur again.
  • Can reinforce or discourage the behavior.

Examples:

  • Receiving praise or a reward.
  • Losing a privilege.
  • Attention from a parent or teacher.
